Stocking Stuffers for Great Dental Health

Having good oral health and a great smile involves not only regular visits to the dentist, but daily at-home oral hygiene too. Some big things come in small packages when it comes to dental health and would make great stocking stuffers for the upcoming holidays.

Flossing doesn’t have to be difficult because there are several different ways to floss your teeth. For many people, using a water flosser makes flossing much easier, and dentists say that water flossers can be as effective as standard floss when used correctly. For traditional flossing, floss picks work great and can be used quickly and when you are on the go, while many people prefer regular string floss. Skip toothpicks when looking for dental stocking stuffers. They are not effective and can harm the gums.

As long as it contains no sugar, chewing gum is fine for your teeth and gums, in fact, it can actually be helpful. In addition to freshening your breath, the act of chewing stimulates saliva production, which helps to wash away food particles and debris. It’s a good idea to chew sugarless gum after meals. Just remember that breath mints don’t have the same benefit of saliva production, and mints, gum or mouthwash should only be used to temporarily remove bad breath. Bad breath that is chronic means that you should see a dentist as soon as possible.

Citrus fruits like oranges are classic stocking stuffers, but there are a few things you should know about how they affect your teeth. While fruits and vegetables are definitely good for you health, they can have a negative effect on your teeth because of the acids they contain. Acid weakens tooth enamel, so go easy on the oranges (and lemons, limes and fruit juices). It’s a good idea to drink water after eating citrus fruit to wash away the excess acid, but don’t try to get rid of it by brushing your teeth right away: Wait at least 20 minutes so your tooth enamel has time to strengthen again.

There are many teeth whitening products you can buy in stores, but just remember that the most effective teeth whitening is only available from dental professionals like the ones at Alabama Family Dentistry. If you have someone on your gift list who would really prefer to whiten their teeth at home, ask us about professional at-home whitening kits.
