Tips to Help Kids Avoid Tooth Decay

For many youngsters, going trick-or-treating is the best part of Halloween. While putting on costumes can be fun, candy remains a main attraction. Unfortunately, sweet treats can terrorize a child’s teeth. Here are some tips to help kids avoid tooth decay.

Consume Candy After Meals

Not only can eating candy before a meal ruin your child’s appetite, but it also makes them more likely to get a cavity. According to the American Dental Association, chewing on food increases the amount of saliva in a person’s mouth. The extra saliva effectively helps rinse away harmful bacteria.

Drink Fluoridated Water

Fluoridated water has been proven to help fight tooth decay. In fact, consuming fluoridated water on a regular basis can reduce tooth decay by 30 percent. Studies show that it can actually strengthen enamel. If your child prefers to drink bottled water, find out if it contains protective levels of fluoride.

Brush Twice a Day

Every child should develop a habit of brushing their teeth twice a day. Alabama Family Dentistry also encourages you to teach your child the importance of brushing their teeth thoroughly. In order to completely remove leftover food particles and sugar, it is recommended to brush for at least two minutes. After three months of use, replace your child’s old toothbrush with a new one.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Flossing is one of the most important aspects of dental health. The bad news is that far too many children fail to do so. If your child flosses daily, there will be a far less likely chance of tooth decay. This is especially true during Halloween. Sticky candies, such as gummy bears and taffy, can easily become hidden between a child’s teeth.

Consider Healthier Alternatives

Convincing your child to choose fruits and veggies over Halloween candy may prove to be a daunting task. Nevertheless, there are some healthier alternatives to consider. Sugar-free lollipops are definitely a good option. These types of candies can help prevent dry mouth, which is a major contributor to tooth decay. If your child loves chocolate, your best bet is to opt for dark chocolate. Milk chocolate contains significantly more sugar.

Don’t allow Halloween to wreck havoc on your child’s dental hygiene. With four convenient locations in the Birmingham area, Alabama Family Dentistry welcomes everyone to stop by for a visit. From routine cleanings to root canals, we provide a wide range of professional dental services.
