Alabama Family Dentistry Recommends Brushing Your Tongue To Help Prevent Bad Breath

Everyone has bad breath at some point throughout their every day lives, but if you find yourself struggling to keep your mouth feeling and smelling fresh on a daily basis, you know how embarrassing it can be. The struggle with chronic bad breath is a real thing and it hinders many people from fully enjoying their lives because they constantly feel self- conscious about it. There is a constant worry about whether or not the people around them can smell it, even when they take great measures to mask it. If you find yourself in this situation, know that you are not alone. Fortunately, there are ways to banish your bad breath problems.

Hydration is Key

One cause of bad breath is a dry mouth. Saliva is more than just the fluid that keeps you from feeling like you have a mouth full of cotton; it actually contains important enzymes that are antibacterial and flush away bacteria and particles that become odorous. Staying hydrated by drinking lots of water will help to cure this problem. Liquids that contain sugar, such as juice and soda, can actually cause dry mouth to become worse, in addition to attracting bacteria, so it is important to stick with water as much as possible.

Brush Your Teeth, Floss and Use Mouthwash Regularly

This may seem like a tip that should go without saying, but it is essential to touch upon. Food particles get stuck in your teeth and begin to decay, causing odor. Brushing your teeth after a meal and flossing daily will loosen the particles and rid your mouth of them, preventing the problem. If you are unable to brush, rinsing your mouth out with mouthwash, eating crisp fruit such as apples, and chewing gum with xylitol will also help clean out food particles and bacteria.

Use Herbs

A lesser known tip for fighting bad breath is using specific herbs. Herbs such as spearmint, rosemary, parsley and eucalyptus can be chewed or placed in tea. Oregano is another great herb and it can be taken in oil form or in capsule form. The oregano has been shown to decrease plaque and the unwanted bacteria that causes bad odors.

Brush Your Tongue

As indicated, bacteria can be diminished by either brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth with water or mouthwash, but did you know bacteria can also gather on your tongue? You can use a special tool such as a tongue scraper to help rid your tongue of the odor causing bacteria or you can use your toothbrush. Some toothbrushes come with a tongue scraper along the back of the toothbrush head.
