Do you have Receding Gums?

Posted by Alabama Family Dentistry in Dentistry Conditions 07 Aug 2013

X-Ray showing Gum Disease | Alabama Family DentistryThis is a common problem for people especially as they get older. Often they are not even aware that they have receding gums because it occurs gradually over the years. It also may affect only some of the teeth and could be in areas that you can’t see. It can be a really serious problem and may be one of the first signs of gum disease. As the gum pulls back it can become more vulnerable to disease-causing bacteria.

You are not alone if you have receding gums since it has been reported that 50% of people have some sort of gum recession. There are several factors that play into receding gums.

  • Periodontal Disease
  • Heredity
  • Brushing to hard
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Lack of dental hygiene
  • Hormonal changes
  • Smoking or tobacco chewing
  • Grinding your teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Body Piercing of the lip or tongue

Your dentist will most likely make you aware of any gum recession. Based on the level of recession, therapies incorporate modifying brushing practices, dental deep cleaning by a dental professional and tooth surgical treatment to restore the periodontal deterioration.
