What is a mini-implant?

A dental implant is a “root” device used to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth. The post is usually made of titanium and is placed within the bone. Dental implants fuse with bone and act as a stabilizer for the tooth, teeth or denture. The mini dental implant procedure takes place in the Alabama Family Dentists office, using local anesthesia. Typically, the procedure takes only one appointment and can be completed within 2 hours.

What is the difference between mini-implants & conventional implants?

The difference is the size. A conventional implant is 3.7mm in diameter or greater, hybrid implants are 3.0-3.7 mm, and mini-implants are less than 3.0mm in diameter. When mini-implants were first used it was for a temporary use. However, when dentists went back in to replace them with permanent apparatus, they discovered that these mini-implants were difficult to remove because the patient’s bone had grown around the implant. Now, mini-implants have been approved by the FDA for long term use for crowns, bridges, and removable over-dentures.

Mini-Implants Are Quicker & More Affordable

The procedure to place mini-implants is quicker, involves less drilling of bone, and less post-operative discomfort than with traditional implants. Many patients who could not previously get conventional implants are now candidate for mini-implants. This has made implant dentistry accessible to many patients at Alabama Family Dentists because of the fast recovery, the procedure is simpler, the material used cost less, and overall more affordable for the patient.
